How to validate your SPF record

A valid SPF record is more than correct syntax. Check all four of these.

To validate your SPF record, confirm four things: your domain publishes exactly one SPF record, the record resolves to fewer than 10 DNS lookups, the syntax is correct, and every legitimate sender is included. You do this by running your domain through an SPF checker that reads the live record from DNS, expands each include chain, and reports the results against the rules in RFC 7208. Validation catches the quiet failures that never produce a bounce.

The four checks that matter

  1. 1

    1. One record per domain

Confirm only a single SPF TXT record exists. Two or more SPF records cause a permerror and break authentication. Merge everything into one string starting with v=spf1.

  2. 2

    2. Under 10 DNS lookups

Expand every include, a, and mx chain and total the lookups. If the count exceeds 10, receivers return a permerror. This is the most common failure and it is invisible in the raw record.

  3. 3

    3. Correct syntax

Check that the record begins with v=spf1, mechanisms are ordered correctly, and it ends with a single valid all qualifier such as -all or ~all.

  4. 4

    4. All senders included

Review the authorized sources and confirm every real sender, from your mailbox provider to your marketing and transactional tools, is present. A missing sender fails legitimately.

The check people skip

The lookup count is the one that quietly breaks SPF. A short-looking record can still resolve to more than 10 lookups and fail.

Why validation cannot be a one-time task

A record that validated last quarter can fail today without you changing anything. Providers add hostnames to their own SPF records, which increases your nested lookups over time, and adding one new vendor can tip you past 10. That is why the lookup count needs ongoing attention rather than a single check at setup. EmailAuth SmartSPF flattens your includes into one optimized record and keeps vendor IP ranges for Salesforce, SendGrid, Microsoft 365, and Google Workspace synced, so your count stays under the limit as vendors change.

Validate the full authentication stack

A valid SPF record is necessary but not sufficient. SPF breaks on forwarding and cannot protect the visible From address on its own, so validation should also confirm DKIM signing is active and your DMARC policy enforces alignment. When all three check out together, a passing SPF result actually contributes to deliverability. Since the 2024 Google and Yahoo rules, bulk senders need this full stack in place.

Run the scan

A free domain scan from EmailAuth performs all four SPF checks at once: it reads your live record, expands the include chain, counts your lookups, verifies the syntax, and lists your authorized senders. If the scan shows you over 10 lookups, SmartSPF flattening resolves it without hand-editing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I validate my SPF record?

Run your domain through an SPF checker that reads the live TXT record and expands each include. Confirm four things: only one SPF record exists, it resolves to fewer than 10 DNS lookups, the syntax is correct, and every legitimate sender is included.

Why should I have only one SPF record per domain?

RFC 7208 allows a single SPF record per domain. Publishing two or more causes a permerror, which is treated as a failure and breaks authentication for your mail. Combine all sources into one record beginning with v=spf1.

How often should I validate my SPF record?

Check it regularly, and beyond the initial once at setup. Vendors add hostnames to their own SPF records over time, which raises your nested lookup count, and adding a new sender can push you past 10. Ongoing validation or automated flattening keeps you under the limit.

Is a valid SPF record enough for deliverability?

No. SPF breaks when mail is forwarded and cannot protect the visible From address alone. You also need DKIM signing and a DMARC policy that enforces alignment. Validate all three together, especially under the 2024 Google and Yahoo sender rules.
